New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted a monthly maintenance of ₹1.75 lakh to the wife of a cardiologist from Kochi. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Prasanna Varale dismissed the doctor's petition challenging the Madras High Court's order.
Earlier, a family court in Chennai had ordered the doctor to pay his wife ₹1.75 lakh per month as maintenance. However, the Madras High Court later reduced this amount to ₹80,000 per month. The doctor approached the Supreme Court seeking a further reduction in the maintenance amount, while his wife filed a plea for an increase.
The Supreme Court, reinstating the family court's original decision, observed that the High Court had overlooked several sources of the doctor's income.
