Boeing Lays Off 2,200 Employees in Washington

Seattle: Boeing has notified the Washington State Employment Security Department that it has laid off 2,199 employees in the state. With this latest round of job cuts, the total number of employees let go by the aerospace giant has reached 17,000.

In October, the company announced plans to reduce its workforce by 10% in the coming months. Boeing has been struggling to recover from financial and regulatory challenges, as well as a nearly two-month-long strike by its machinists.

Before the layoff notices were issued last week, Boeing had 66,000 employees in Washington. The recent layoffs include more than 400 members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), the union representing professional aerospace workers. These employees, however, will remain on the job until mid-January.

Unionized employees began returning to work earlier this month after the strike ended.
