Srinagar (News Agencies). A doctor and six workers were killed in a terrorist attack at a tunnel construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district. This information was provided by officers.
Officials said, when laborers and other personnel working on a tunnel project in Gund area of the district returned to their camp late in the evening, unidentified terrorists attacked them. The terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on the group of workers, which included both locals and outsiders. It is believed that the number of terrorists was at least two. Two workers died on the spot, while four other injured workers and a doctor later succumbed to their injuries, officials said. He said, treatment of five injured is going on. Security forces have cordoned off the area and started a search operation to trace the attackers.
Top security officials, including Kashmir Inspector General of Police VK Birdi, have reached the spot to assess the situation. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the death toll could rise. The death toll in the Gagangir attack is not final as many workers, both local and non-local, have been injured, he wrote on 'X'. I am praying for the complete recovery of the injured as the seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar. Abdullah condemned the attack, which came just four days after he was sworn in as chief minister of the union territory. Earlier on October 16, terrorists had shot dead a non-local youth in Shopian.
