Mumbai. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cautioned the public about "deepfake" videos of its Governor, Shaktikanta Das, being circulated on social media. These fake videos falsely claim that the central bank has launched or endorsed certain investment schemes.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the RBI warned the public about "deepfake videos of senior management" being shared on social media, offering financial advice. The statement said, "The Reserve Bank of India has become aware of fake videos of the Governor being circulated on social media. These videos falsely claim that the RBI has launched or endorsed certain investment schemes."
The videos, created using advanced technology, attempt to persuade viewers to invest money in such schemes.
The RBI clarified, "The Reserve Bank categorically states that its officials are not involved in or endorsing any such activities. These videos are completely fake. The RBI does not provide any financial investment advice."
The central bank has urged the public to remain vigilant against such "deepfake" videos circulating on social media.
