- On November 17, passenger count hit a record 5.05 lakh
New Delhi. For the first time, the number of domestic air passengers in India crossed the five lakh mark in a single day, setting a new record. This milestone reflects strong travel demand driven by festive celebrations and the wedding season.
According to data from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, airlines operated 3,173 flights on Sunday (November 17), with 5,05,412 passengers traveling. This is the first time domestic air passenger numbers have surpassed the five lakh mark in a single day.
Cleartrip's Vice President (Air Category), Gaurav Patwari, said, "The main reasons for the surge in passenger numbers are festive demand and the onset of wedding season. We expect the strong demand to continue through the winter."
However, in recent times, on-time performance (OTP) of airlines has been affected due to various reasons. On Sunday, Indigo recorded an OTP of 74.2%, followed by Alliance Air at 71% and Akasa Air at 67.6%. Other airlines like SpiceJet and Air India reported OTPs of 66.1% and 57.1%, respectively.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had announced in October that Indian airlines would operate 25,007 flights weekly from 124 airports during the winter schedule, which began on October 27.
