New Delhi. For the first time in 15 years, India has emerged as the leading country sending the most international students to the United States. According to the Open Doors Report 2024 released on Monday, over 3.3 lakh Indian students are currently enrolled in U.S. educational institutions. During the 2022-23 academic year, China held the top spot, with India ranking second in sending international students to the U.S.
The report highlights that in the 2023-24 academic year, the number of Indian students in the U.S. reached a record 331,602, a 23% increase compared to 268,923 in the previous academic year. A statement from the U.S. Embassy noted that Indian students now account for 29% of all international students in the U.S., making India the top source of international students after overtaking China, which had held this position since the 2008-09 academic year.
According to official data in the report, the top five countries sending the most international students to the U.S. in 2023-24 are:
1. India (331,602 students)
2. China (277,398 students)
3. South Korea (43,149 students)
4. Canada (28,998 students)
5. Taiwan (23,157 students)
The U.S. academic calendar generally runs from September to May. The report also highlights India's dominance in graduate-level education (postgraduate and Ph.D. students). For the second consecutive year, India sent the most international graduate students to the U.S., with the number rising by 19% to 196,567 in 2023-24 compared to the previous academic year.
Additionally, the number of Indian undergraduate students in the U.S. grew by 13% to 36,053, while non-degree students decreased by 28%, dropping to 1,426.
The Open Doors Report was released to mark the beginning of International Education Week (IEW). This milestone reflects the growing aspirations of Indian students to pursue higher education in the U.S. and underscores India's significant contribution to the global education landscape.
