- Accused of War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
The Hague. The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Thursday issued
arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a former
defense minister, and Hamas officials. They are accused of war crimes and
crimes against humanity related to the war in Gaza and the October 2023
attacks.
After the October 2023 attacks on
Israel, the country launched a military offensive in Palestinian territories.
Several Hamas officials have been killed in the ongoing conflict. The ICC's
decision now designates Netanyahu and others as internationally wanted
suspects, potentially complicating efforts to negotiate a ceasefire and end the
13-month-long conflict.
However, the practical impact of the
warrants may be limited, as Israel and its key ally, the United States, are not
members of the ICC. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have condemned the
warrant request by ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan, labeling it as disgraceful
and anti-Semitic.
