Unique identity cards will be mandatory for workers

New Delhi. The central government will make a unique identity card mandatory for all building and construction workers across the country to ensure the rights of migrant workers are protected.

This identity card will be linked to the worker's Aadhaar and will also be linked in the e-Shram database. Giving this information on Wednesday, Labor Secretary Aarti Ahuja said that detailed information on these reforms can be released next week. He made this comment while addressing 'The Migration Conclave' organized by All India Organization of Employers (AIOE) and industry body FICCI in collaboration with International Labor Organization (ILO) here.

Ahuja talked about ways to deal with the challenges arising from the increasing cases of contractors employing unregistered laborers. He said the four labor codes require contractors to provide comprehensive benefits to these workers in line with the provisions of the Interstate Migrant Workers Act. These include minimum wages, occupational safety and access to basic facilities like toilets and crèches at work. Ahuja said the ministry also plans to implement measures to ensure adequate shelter, sanitation and awareness of rights at these places.

On this occasion, Satoshi Sasaki, Deputy Director of the International Labor Organization, underlined the importance of labor migration in the present and future labor market. He also talked about the opportunities and challenges faced by migrant workers.
